Another morning of class followed by an afternoon excursion. We headed first to Mawei to see the Luoxing Pagoda.
| The orange trumpet vine is just starting to bloom. |
The Luoxing Pagoda was built by Liu Qiang, a beautiful women from Guangdong whose husband died in Fuzhou. She built it in his memory. Fuzhou was one of the five treaty ports and many foreigners would recognize the pagoda as they sailed into the port and would exclaim "China Tower" when they saw it. It was also possible to address a letter to someone in Fuzhou by simply writing "China Tower" as the address and it would arrive in Fuzhou.
The banyan tree is the city tree, and we admired many very large ones. Karl is trying to give perspective for this giant tree.
We have been accompanied by at least two Hwa Nan photographers on every outing. At first we thought we were being followed by paparazzi, but finally clued in they were just students photographing our every move, including taking in the port museum.
Rental bikes and the ditching of the competitors' bikes was a common site on our last trip to China. Their numbers have been greatly reduced.
View of the port from the former British Consulate.
The British Consulate had a commanding view.
They also had cells to hold indentured Chinese workers. We ended our evening eating dinner at Hwa Nan and packing for our road trip tomorrow.
