Tibetan Sand Mandala

Karl took Mason and a group of scouts to the University of Puget Sound on Saturday to work on their Citizenship in the World merit badge. A group of Tibetan monks were visiting and creating a sand mandala in the library. The mandala represents both the beautiful and temporary nature of life.

They had dishes of brightly colored sand and they used a tube with a fine tipped end and a tapping stick to allow only a few grains of sand to come out at a time. It took 18 hours to complete. The monks have been staying near campus and eating at the school cafeteria. Their favorite food: french fries!
Here's the completed project. After only one hour, they swept it and bagged it and returned it to running water (in our case, the Sound.)
