Getting Back to My City By the Bay

Karl was asked to give a talk to the school's Bay Area Alumni group in San Francisco.  The event was held in a very funky site called The Box http://theboxsf.com/ which calls itself "historic and elegantly cool."  They booked us in an equally funky hotel just a half block away.

It was located just south of Market on the edge of the Mission District--not Union Square, but within walking distance.

Karl lectured the first night and then we had one day to play in the city.  We bought an all-day pass for the cable cars and road around  getting off at China Town, Fisherman's Wharf and Ghiradelli Square.

We actually made two trips to China Town and had lunch at King Spicy, a Szechuan style Chinese restaurant, which was delicious!

Our first trip to China Town was to visit this museum, The Chinese Historical Society.  It is housed in a Julia Morgan designed building, originally a China Town YMCA.  We were too early and had to come back later to be able to go inside.

We had beautiful Spring weather on our free day.  It was very rainy and foggy on the day we arrived.
We found lots of sunny spots to sit and soak in the sun.
We even made it to Berkeley to have wonderful Korean food with our Berkeley friends.  We saw our San Jose friends too, but didn't get pictures.

I thought that dish looked Korean! What a fun get-away/business trip. And such a fun city to visit. Our kids have never been. It's on our vacation to-do list!
