This piece of art was hanging in our hotel room. We stayed in the Crown Plaza Hamilton and these quotes are from Alexander Hamilton.
This might have been Karl's favorite exhibit. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the National Archives had a very interesting display of documents and artifacts.
The Hirshhorn Museum had a special collection of some of the Chinese contemporary artist Ai Weiwei's work. This could have been one of my favorite exhibits--but it is too hard to decide.
Outside the Museum they had a collection of Ai Weiwei's Chinese zodiac sculptures. We couldn't remember our signs, so we stood by the ones we thought we were. Karl thought he was a sheep but he was wrong. He is a rooster!
I thought I was a rabbit and I was right!
Another Ai Weiwei sculpture. It was fascinating to look at how he combined these bikes.
Karl in front of Ai Weiwei's piece called "Provisional Landscapes". It shows scenes of various levels of the development the modern Chinese landscape.
This piece is called "Straight". It uses rebar recovered from the rubble of the collapsed schools in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake due to faulty construction.
Hanging from the ceiling is a snake made from school children's backpacks. Ai Weiwei created a citizen's investigation of the earthquake with the goal of compiling a list of all the students' names. It has grown to over 5,000 names.
We did make it to some other museums. The National Gallery had a special Lichtenstein exhibit that was really interesting. We found out shortly after taking this picture that photos were not allowed. My favorite works of his were done with dots in the Chinese Landscape manner.
On our way to the luncheon, just passing by the White House.
The sun actually shines in this Washington in the winter!
The problem with visiting DC but staying on Washington State time is that it gets dark awfully early.
We went in the National Botanical Gardens. It felt tropical under the bougainvillaea.
They also created an arid micro climate too.
We had to eat in China Town. We've now eaten in Philadelphia, San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Washington DC, and Vancouver BC China Towns. It was delicious!
Flying in and out of National was super easy. It was only a 20 minute subway ride from our hotel to the airline ticketing counter.

wow! How fabulous! A great honor for Karl plus a great trip too. It looks like you had a fun and interesting time!
It was a great trip and fortunately we both like museums! I have had several people tell me they love museums but their spouses do not. We could have stayed longer.
